The future of video may involve a machine we already threw away.
I think there is a VCR somewhere in your future.
Not hidden in your parents' attic. Not sitting under a CRT in an “authentic ’90s” Airbnb. I mean plugged in, working, connected to a television, with a blank tape nearby waiting for something to happen.
This sounds ridiculous because the VCR already died once.
DVD killed it. Streaming buried it. The machine had performed its historical duty: it let an entire generation record television, rent movies, shoot terrible home videos, fast-forward through commercials and accumulate mysterious tapes labeled things like SUMMER 94 / DO NOT ERASE.
Then we built something better.
We made video sharper, cleaner, infinitely reproducible, instantly editable and available everywhere.
And now, slightly inconveniently, we have also made the moving image fundamentally easier to question.
That is why the timing of the VHS revival is much more interesting than another round of ’90s nostalgia.
Welcome back, videotape.

Before video became a file, it was an object.
The VHS revival has found its manifesto
In June 2026, filmmaker Robert dos Santos released This Is How the World Ends on VHS before bringing it to more conventional formats. The release was marketed as the first straight-to-VHS feature in roughly two decades, but the more interesting part was dos Santos's reasoning: he explicitly connected physical media, imperfection and human-made art with his rejection of AI-generated culture.
The movie was not secretly photographed on some untouched 1987 camcorder. Its VHS release is primarily a distribution choice, not proof of an entirely analog production chain.
That distinction matters.
But culturally, it feels like somebody arriving at exactly the right party five minutes early.

The VCR no longer has to look like a museum exhibit.
The VHS comeback does not need to become huge to matter.
Vinyl did not have to defeat Spotify to become culturally important again. Film photography did not need to beat the iPhone. A format can return precisely because it refuses to compete on convenience.
And VHS has inconvenience to spare.
First, a correction: VHS is not AI-proof
There is a tempting version of this argument that goes like this:
Shoot on VHS because AI can't fake VHS.
Unfortunately, AI can fake VHS.
It can generate tracking errors, bleeding colors, CRT scan lines, blown highlights, timestamp graphics and the particular green-purple sludge produced by a dying camcorder at a family barbecue in 1996.
More importantly, somebody can generate an AI video digitally and record the finished result onto an analog cassette.
The cassette does not suddenly make the pixels truthful.

A tape is a physical original only when the recording process gives it that status.
VHS is also not the only non-digital way to capture moving pictures. Betamax, Video8, Hi8 and photochemical film are part of a much larger analog history.
So the useful argument isn't that VHS automatically proves reality.
It is this:
Analog capture gives us a physical recording process in a culture where the origin of an image is becoming increasingly abstract.
That is a much stranger—and potentially much more valuable—quality.

Magnetic tape has limitations a file does not. Those limitations may be part of the appeal.
The next retro obsession is already rewinding
If you want to know how a supposedly obsolete tape format can become desirable again, look at the smaller tape sitting beside it.
The audio cassette should make absolutely no sense in the streaming era.
It hisses. It wears out. You cannot tap the screen to jump from track two to track nine. The player occasionally decides that the album would be better as several feet of brown ribbon wrapped around its internal mechanism.
People are buying them anyway.
In the UK, cassette sales reached 164,000 units in 2025, up 53 percent from the previous year, according to Official Charts Company data. It remains a niche format, but “niche” is rather different from “dead.”

The cassette player has already completed the journey from obsolete appliance to desirable object.
The interesting word here isn't nostalgia.
Plenty of the people discovering cassettes today were born after the format's original cultural peak. You cannot literally remember an era you never experienced.
What you can discover is friction.
A cassette makes listening require a tiny amount of participation. You pick something. You insert it. You press play. Side A ends. You turn it over.
There is no autoplay strategy silently waiting behind the plastic door.

Infinite access created a new appetite for finite media.

Buttons, mechanisms and meters: analog media makes the act of playback visible.
That appetite is beginning to show up around movies too.

VHS looks bad. That's why it looks good.
For twenty years, cameras have been engaged in a remarkably successful campaign to remove themselves from the image.
More resolution. Better stabilization. Better autofocus. Better dynamic range. Cleaner shadows. Computational sharpening. Noise reduction. HDR.
The ideal contemporary camera often wants you to forget that a camera existed.
VHS does the opposite.
You can practically see the machine thinking.

The camcorder is not invisible. It announces itself in the resulting image.
Colors bleed past their borders. Highlights bloom. Shadows collapse. Straight lines wobble. Details dissolve into magnetic fog. Tracking errors tear through the frame.
The tape ages.
The machine ages.
The picture remembers both.
Digital culture has spent years reconstructing this language with filters, plug-ins, fake date stamps, chromatic aberration and beautifully simulated tape damage.
But there remains a difference between footage with a VHS effect and footage that actually traveled through an analog video system.
One is an aesthetic.
The other is a process.

Real analog video is the result of a machine, a signal and a recording medium—not an overlay.

The interesting part of an analog revival is using the equipment, not simply copying its artifacts.
Your VCR is an absurd mechanical miracle
Part of the pleasure is the machine itself.
A VCR doesn't feel like a black box in the contemporary sense. Push a tape through the door and a complicated electromechanical system physically pulls magnetic tape from the cassette and wraps it around a rapidly spinning head drum.
It is ridiculous.
It is ingenious.
And unlike tapping a thumbnail on Netflix, you can hear it happen.

Software hides its machinery. VHS puts the mechanism in the room with you.
This matters because the experience of media has become increasingly detached from the devices actually producing it.
A VCR makes technology physical again.
Press eject and something moves.
Press rewind and you wait.
Something wonderful has happened when rewinding starts sounding almost rebellious.
The original you can point at
This is where VHS starts becoming relevant to the AI argument.
For most of photographic history, the idea of an original was easy to understand.
There was a negative.
A reel.
A master tape.
An object existed upstream from the copies.
Digital media complicated this beautifully. A file can be duplicated perfectly, transmitted instantly and edited without leaving the sort of scars ordinary viewers can recognize.
Generative AI complicates it again.
We are moving from asking, “Was this image edited?” toward asking, “Did a camera ever see this at all?”

The cassette is not proof by itself. Its significance is that a physical source object can exist.
There are serious digital approaches to that problem.
The C2PA standard behind Content Credentials is designed to preserve provenance information about how digital media was created and modified. Its own documentation is careful about the point: provenance provides information and indicators of authenticity; it is not a magical declaration that whatever appears in an image is true.
That distinction is useful for analog media too.
A VHS cassette cannot testify.
But an original analog camera tape can be part of a chain of custody.
The date, camera, operator, labeling, physical tape, continuous recording and storage history can all become pieces of evidence around the image.
That is very different from saying “VHS can't be faked.”
It can.
The interesting thing is that process becomes visible again.

Analog and digital provenance are not enemies. They are two responses to the same new question: where did this image come from?
AI will perfect the VHS look. That may make real VHS more valuable.
There is an irony coming.
Generative video will become exceptionally good at looking terrible.
The more sophisticated synthetic imagery becomes, the easier it will be to request a “1997 consumer VHS camcorder recording, second-generation dub, damaged tape, tracking instability, overexposed fluorescent lighting” and receive something eerily convincing.
The aesthetic will be cheap.
Which means the process may become expensive.

When every visual style becomes promptable, the way an image was actually made gains importance.
Think about what happened to film photography.
Digital tools became extremely good at simulating grain, halation and old color stocks. People still buy film.
The simulation did not eliminate the original process.
In some ways it clarified what the process was worth.
VHS could travel down the same road.
Not because magnetic tape produces the objectively best image.
Because sometimes you want the constraints to be real.
The comeback is moving beyond thrift stores
In 2024, Alien: Romulus received an official limited-edition VHS release, presented in 4:3 with deliberately old-school packaging. It was an obvious collector object, but it was also a major studio treating VHS as a legitimate contemporary release format rather than archaeological debris.
Two years later, This Is How the World Ends pushed the idea further by making the tape central to how the movie was initially experienced.
Those are very different gestures.
One says: remember VHS?
The other asks: what if VHS still has something useful to do?

The cassette is becoming packaging, collectible, archive and medium all over again.
That second question is the one worth following.
The revival does not require millions of people to throw out their OLED televisions.
A small but active ecosystem of collectors, filmmakers, musicians, repairers, labels and weird little distributors is enough to turn a supposedly dead medium into a live one.
The cassette has already demonstrated the model.

Dead formats have an annoying habit of becoming subcultures.
Gen Z didn't bring back the past. It discovered scarcity.
There is a lazy explanation for all of this: young people are obsessed with nostalgia.
That doesn't quite work.
Someone born in 2005 isn't remembering Blockbuster in 1998.
Something else is happening.
A generation raised with effectively infinite digital access is discovering the peculiar satisfaction of finite objects.
One cassette contains one album.
One roll of 35mm film has a fixed number of exposures.
One VHS cassette holds a limited amount of video.
A shelf eventually runs out of space.

Physical limitation is no longer simply a technological failure. It can be the reason to choose the format.
A collection can be completed.
A tape can be borrowed.
A box can be written on.
An object can disappear for twenty years and return with somebody's handwriting on it.
A family VHS tape can be accidentally recorded over by your dad because nothing in analog culture understood version control.
These are weaknesses.
They are also experiences.
Digital media promised to free culture from physical limitations.
It succeeded.
Now limitation itself has become interesting.

The object does not offer infinite choice. That's increasingly the point.
Rewinding is a feature now
You have to rewind a VHS tape.
You have to store it somewhere.
You have to label it.
You can only watch what you physically possess.
Finding a particular scene can involve staring at meaningless fast-moving interference while guessing whether you've gone too far.
In 1998, these were engineering problems waiting to be solved.
In 2026, some of them sound almost luxurious.

A VCR requires more from you than “continue watching.”
There is no feed.
No autoplay.
No recommendation engine.
No home screen reorganizing itself around what an optimization system thinks might keep you watching for another 23 minutes.
Your VCR has absolutely no opinion about you.
It is refreshingly stupid.
It contains a tape and performs violence upon it at a very precise speed.
That is the product.
The anti-cloud family archive
There is another part of the revival that has almost nothing to do with aesthetics.
A box of old videotapes is annoying, bulky and vulnerable to time.
But you know where it is.
That quality feels newly meaningful when so much of our personal history exists as an accumulation of files distributed across phones, cloud accounts, abandoned hard drives, private social networks and services we assume will continue existing indefinitely.

The family archive used to occupy a drawer. Now it often exists wherever the password still works.
This does not mean you should entrust your children's memories exclusively to thirty-year-old magnetic tape.
Please don't.
Archival preservation generally benefits from redundancy, careful storage and migration.
The interesting idea is simpler: physical possession has become a feature again.
You can own a cassette without owning an account.
You can lend it without agreeing to terms of service.
Nobody can remotely remove it from your shelf.
Buy the machine, not the filter
If this revival continues, I think its next phase will look familiar.
The VCR will stop being treated exclusively as obsolete home electronics and start being treated as an instrument.
Independent filmmakers will build projects around actual analog capture.
Bands will make limited physical video releases.
Repair technicians will suddenly become extremely useful people to know.
Old camcorders will be judged less by resolution than by the particular ugliness of their image.
A generation that learned what VHS looks like through horror games, TikTok effects and YouTube compression will eventually become curious about what the real machine does.

Eventually somebody always asks what happens when you stop emulating the old tool and actually use it.
And somewhere in the middle of all this, the phrase “original tape exists” may start sounding important.
Not because tape is inherently truthful.
Not because analog technology can defeat generative AI.
But because the more synthetic imagery surrounds us, the more interesting the history of an image becomes.
Who recorded it?
On what?
Where is the original?
What happened between capture and publication?
Can somebody show you the thing?

The future of authenticity may be less about how an image looks and more about the trail it leaves behind.
Those questions matter whether the answer is an analog master tape, a signed digital provenance record, a film negative or some system nobody has invented yet.
VHS is not the technological solution to the AI era.
That would be too neat.
It may become something more culturally useful: a reminder that an image once had to happen somewhere before it could appear everywhere.

Maybe the luxury object of synthetic culture is simply a recorded original.
So yes.
I think it's time for you to get a VCR.
Not because the future is going backward.
Because the future is about to make the past useful again.
